Full title reads: “Pathetone now has pleasure in presenting Billy Merson in one his celebrated sketches“.
Merson’s famous “Desdemonia“ (aka Desdemona) sketch, Pathe Studios, London.
Set dressed to look like Roman villa. Merson enters dressed as Roman Caesar. A pretty girl in a toga reclines on a chaise longue. Various shots of comedian, Merson, singing comic song about Cleopatra.
The girl asks him where his been and Merson enters into monologue in Shakespearean style about an ill-fated date with Cleo where he ended up in gaol.
Merson then takes a pretends lyre and sings another comic song - “Desdemonia“ which finishes with immortal line “If you won’t be my Desdemonia, I’m not standing here to catch pneumonia, I’m going to put my trousers on and go back to Wigan where the tripe comes from!“
