Sneaky Jumping Cholla. Cactus Attack!

I want to introduce to you this blood-thirsty cactus. It’s a cactus from the genus Cylindropuntia or cholla cactus. I wasn’t careful and I let myself get into trouble. I stepped on the dangerous cactus’ habitat ranges from southern USA to Mexico, South America and some Caribbean islands. Cylindropuntia cactus is different from other cactus because it’s spines has tons of barbs much like fishing hooks. This cactus hides alongside the road or trail in order to attack careless humans and animals. If you touch one of them, the form a chain and quite literally jump onto you. They have a spring effect that makes it look as if they are attacking you from nowhere. They stick to your skin and clothes and it is very painful. If you’re going to try too free yourself, they try to fight back and enter your skin deeper. When they get to the capillaries, it can cause bleeding bruising and a hematoma under the skin. Don’t try to get rid of them with your hand since they will attach themselves to your finger. Use an instrument. Clamps, brush or gloves or even a tree branch can do the job just so that You don’t hurt yourself. These spines have a line of fishhooks that only allow the spine to go in one direction, which is deeper and deeper into your skin. Be careful because they can easily break off and can become a splinter and cause inflammation or infection. But don’t worry, salty water softens them and makes it easier to get them out. You cannot die from this cactus but in a case where you fall onto a cactus there can be some consequences. Getting speared by one of the spines can soon cause swelling an redness. Worst case scenario, it can cause gangrene or your skin may die as a result of the initial swelling and redness. You have to be extremely careful. I don’t wanna have another bad experience with this cactus ever again. I removed the spines but they were still in there and I had splinters for a long while after the encounter. The barbs made it much harder to take them out. This whole process is simply for vegetative propagation of this cactus. The top segments of this plant fall off, attach themselves to someone, and spread root themselves and develop into new plants.
