Mexican mayoral candidate shot and killed

A politician in Mexico’s Guerrero state has been fatally shot during a campaign rally. Alfredo Cabrera was meeting with voters in the town of Coyuca de Benitez on Wednesday, when an unknown person approached him and shot him several times at point blank range. The gunman was reportedly killed at the scene. Cabrera was part of a coalition supporting Xochitl Galvez, a businesswoman currently polling second in the country’s presidential race. His death is the latest in a spate of murders plaguing Mexican elections, with the government reporting on Tuesday that at least 22 people running for local office had been murdered since last September. Security is set to be ramped up ahead of Sunday’s local and national elections, with around 27,000 soldiers and National Guard members to be deployed on polling day. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Freedom over censorship, truth over narrative.
