Spanish Hieroglyphs On Black Top Mesa | Hiking The Superstition Mountains
I saw a marking on my map that said Spanish Hieroglyphs on Black Top Mesa in the Superstitions. On a whim, without prior research, I decided to head up to this point and see what kind of hieroglyphs they were. It turned into an amazing day in the Supes and I eventually found the hieroglyphs. They were in the form of a Sun as well as, what I later found out, is a map used by the Spanish in the 1800’s to indicate the locations of their gold caches.

I left from First Water Trailhead and took the Dutchman Trail up to Bull Pass where I found an unmarked trail leading up the east side of Black Top Mesa.
This trail puts you on top of the mesa and sends you all the way down to the southern point. After some careful searching, you will find the hieroglyphs just over the edge of the mesa.
I retraced my path but took Black Mesa trail over to Second Water and then back to the trailhead for a full day with a variety of scenery.
