Tamo daleko (1917)

Probably the oldest recording of this famous Serbian song.⁽¹⁾ “Tamo daleko“ (“There Far Away“) became known around the globe thanks to reports of it’s popularity with Serb soldiers recuperating on the island of Corfu following the harrowing withdrawal of the Serbian army through Albania, during which hundreds of thousands of soldiers and civilians died of cold, starvation, and enemy attacks in the Albanian mountains. In this version of “Tamo daleko“, possibly borrowed from a much older folk song, the Serbian soldier sadly recalls his village and loved ones “there far away“ in his homeland of Serbia. ◆ ⁽¹⁾ This recording was made in New York, in 1917, by an unnamed tamburitza orchestra listed simply as “Tamburaško Pevačko Društvo“.
