The 7,300 Foot Wide Yellowstone Explosion Crater; Mary’s Bay Crater
Looking around Yellowstone there are a group of several thousand foot wide explosion craters. Many of these craters have formed in the last 10,000 years, representing an often underreported future hazard within the National Park. The largest of these craters measures more than 7,300 feet across, and formed in a steam explosion equivalent in energy to a blast of several hundred kilotons of TNT. What I am referring to is Mary’s Bay Crater, which is located at depth in Yellowstone Lake.
