* “The Census List“ was an amalgam of Gogol’s stories created by Yuri Lubimov. Although most sources name the play in with this title, others also name it as “The Dead Souls Register“, or “The Inspector’s Tale“, which is a specific story by Gogol. Additionally, and more confusingly, Schnittke later wrote a soundtrack for a television series after Gogol’s story “Dead Souls“, out of which Rozhdestvensky fashioned yet another suite.
