Nottinghams Tunnel Disaster - Park Tunnel

In the mid 19th century, The Fifth Duke of Newcastle employed the architect Thomas Chambers Hine to design and construct Park Tunnel as the main entrance to the Park, As Ant Mentioned, The Duke of Newcastle’s original requirement was for a tunnel with a maximum gradient of 1 in 14. The completed tunnel has a steeper gradient of 1 in 12. This was too great for horsedrawn carriages, and defeated the purpose of its construction.
