Typhoon Malakas has hit Japan! Strong wind and big waves on the Ogasawara Islands

On Friday afternoon, typhoon Malakas hit Japan’s Ogasawara Islands in the Pacific Ocean. Prior to landfall, its central pressure was 950 hectopascals and its maximum wind speed was about 160 km/h. The sea became restless, with waves up to 5 meters high. After reaching land, the maximum wind speed was 125 km/h and gusts up to 180 km/h. The development of rain clouds accompanying the typhoon brought heavy rainfall to the islands. In some areas, up to 200 millimeters of rain fell during the day. On Saturday, typhoon Malakas reached the Izu Islands south of Tokyo. Meteorologists are calling for caution due to strong winds and high waves. Ogasawara is a group of over 40 islands located between the Marianas and Japan.
