Lake Biwa (Biwa-ko), Largest Lake in Japan, Shiga Prefecture

Lake Biwa is a naturally formed freshwater lake in Japan and it is located in Shiga Prefecture. It is the main source of fresh water and other nourishments for most residents of the Kansai Region. It is considered as one of the oldest lakes in the world and has been mentioned in the ancient Japanese literature. One of the cruise boats on Lake Biwa is named “Michigan“ to celebrate the fact the city of Otsu has close ties with State of Michigan (Lansing in Michigan is considered as a sister state of Otsu).
