The Colt Model 723 and “Commando“ Model 733 were transitional 80’s-90’s carbines that laid the groundwork for the development of what we see in general issue for the U.S. Military. This particular model was made famous by the scene from Black Hawk Down, when one of the two helicopter snipers (Master Sgt. Gary Gordon and Master Sgt. Randy Shugart) rescued a fallen comrade with no expected support in sight.
SFOD-D (Delta Force) operators were amongst the first to experiment with these Car15’s that were a solution to the multipurpose-carbine to be used with the new Aimpoint sights and OPSINC suppressors.
We attempt to delve into the topic of the early Delta Force carbine, and find out exactly why they were so attached to this design; and the characteristics that Master Sgt. Gary Gordon’s carbine makes it so attractive even for today’s purposes.
