In brief, Tanam is a rhythmic elaboration of a ragam ( musical scale ) using the syllables “a-Nam-Tam“ which builds up gradually in tempo starting with vilambit laya ( slow tempo ). Its a part of Manodharma sangeetam (music improvisation) and Anibadhdha sangeetam ( a piece of music which is not set to any specific time cycle - talam ) in Carnatic music tradition.
