Adelaide Hall at the Nightingale Club, London (1948)

Extract from A World is Turning (1948) - watch the complete film free on BFI Player (UK only): This excerpt featuring legendary jazz singer Adelaide Hall (1901-1993) is taken from an unfinished film called ’A World is Turning’, intended to highlight the contribution of black men and women to British society at a time when they were struggling for visibility on our screens. Only six reels of rushes remain, including scenes of Hall rehearsing songs such as “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot“; filming appears to have been halted due to the director’s illness. All titles on the BFI Films channel are preserved in the vast collections of the BFI National Archive. To find out more about the Archive visit
