Matayoshi Kobudo training begins with the BO. The classical teaching program consists of Bo Hojoundo Ichi, followed by Bo Hojoundo Ni and then Bo Hojoundo San. The first kata taught is Shushi No Kon, which incorporates techniques from three hojoundo.
Bo Hojoundo San is quite difficult for the beginning student, especially for children. This means that Shushi No Kon is a relatively advanced kata in terms of the techniques needed to perform the kata.
Andrea Guarelli sensei identified a need for a simpler, first teaching kata that would allow children to have faster success and lower their frustration. This, in turn, would increase retention among students, helping to grow Matayoshi Kobudo as an art.
From 1987 (definitive versions in 1993), with permission granted by Matayoshi Shinpo Sensei, Guarelli created two new teaching katas:
Kihon kata Ichi (for young students up to 7 years old) including all the techniques from Bo Hojoundo Ichi.
Kihon kata Ni (for students from 8 years old to adults) incl
