Huawei’s return to the Chinese smartphone market has significantly pressured both domestic competitors and Apple. With a market share reaching 15%, Huawei is making a substantial impact, though it hasn’t reached its peak. The intensified competition, especially in the flagship smartphone segment, poses a considerable challenge to Apple. Industry experts note that Huawei’s comeback affects domestic brands and pressures mobile SoC suppliers like Qualcomm and MediaTek. As of June’s last week, top brands in the Chinese market—Apple, Honor, Huawei, and Xiaomi—had similar shipments in the first half of 2024, each slightly over 20 million units, accounting for about 15%. Oppo and Vivo shipped 17 million units each. Despite its absence in international markets, other Chinese brands face fierce competition from Apple and Samsung, both with strong global influence. Sources indicate that consumers outside China prefer Samsung and Apple flagship devices. Industry insiders suggest Chinese brands are more likely to make breakthroughs in the flagship segment in their home market, a primary goal for 2024. Qualcomm, a major chip supplier for high-end Samsung smartphones, will see limited impact on its top-tier SoC shipments from Huawei’s return. MediaTek aims to diversify risks by reducing reliance on Chinese customers and aggressively entering Samsung’s supply chain. Having Samsung as a client is crucial for MediaTek’s expansion in the global flagship smartphone market. Continuous growth in China’s smartphone demand helps mitigate the seasonal decline in global shipments. According to the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, national smartphone shipments reached million units in May 2024, with 5G phones accounting for million units, up 16.5% and 26.6% year-on-year, respectively.
