Carl Haag was born in Erlangen, Bavaria, and studied at the Nuremberg Academy of Fine Arts and the University of Munich. He began his career as an illustrator and oil painter of portraits and architectural subjects, but in 1847 he relocated to England to study English watercolour methods. Following that, he committed himself to watercolours. In 1850, Carl Haag was made an associate of the Royal Society of Painters in Water Colours, and in 1853, he was elected a full member. He was also a favorite of Queen Victoria. Between 1858 and 1860, he traveled to the Middle East, initially residing in Cairo for over a year and sharing a studio with artist Frederick Goodall. Carl Haag later visited Jerusalem, Lebanon, and Syria before returning to Cairo. During this time, he drew several drawings, which he later turned into paintings after returning to London.
