Its origin is supposed to have been a common military song among the Picards and Burgundian troops following the death of the Duke Charles the Bold and the annexation of the country by Louix XI King of France, in 1479. Following the death of the duke and the fall of the Duchy of Burgundy, the troops, who fought the French for years refused to obey the King of France and went to the rightful inheritor, Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor, begging him to go to war against France to reclaim the Duchy.
