Azeri Apology To Putin As Russian Peacekeepers Killed In Nagorno-Karabakh Amid Armenia Peace Talks
Azerbaijan’s presidency said a delegation of ethnic Armenians had arrived in the town of Yevlakh for talks on Sept. 21. Azerbaijan began an “anti-terrorist” operation in Nagorno-Karabakh on Sept. 19 after some of its troops were allegedly killed by Armenian separatists. Armenian officials said that at least 32 people were killed, including seven civilians, and another 200 wounded. Armenia accused Azerbaijan of opening fire on troops near the town of Sotk late on Sept. 20, after the ceasefire had been agreed. Meanwhile, Russia said its peacekeepers have taken in about 5,000 Karabakh residents after evacuating them from dangerous areas on Sept. 21. A military vehicle carrying Russian peacekeepers came under fire and its crew was killed near the village of Dzhanyatag. Azerbaijani President Aliyev apologised to Putin and expressed condolences “over the tragic death of the Russian servicemen”, the Kremlin said.
