In economics, consumption is considered as the final phase of the production process, when the good obtained is capable of serving the consumer as useful. On a daily basis, we are mercilessly bombarded by advertising with the aim of turning wants into needs. Marketing experts know that emotions greatly influence the consumer. Hence, both advertising and establishments are designed to awaken emotions. This excessive publicity that makes one believe that everything one sees is needed has generated a phenomenon in the world known as consumerism, which in the era in which we are living in which technological advances are more and more frequent, is more notorious and it affects our society more than ever. There are goods and services that are depleted at the time of consumption, such as food, while there are others that are only transformed, for example, a plane trip. Consumerism is a social and economic order that encourages an acquisition of goods and services in ever-increasing amounts. With the industrial revolution, but particularly in the 20th century, mass production led to overproductionโ€”the supply of goods would grow beyond consumer demand, and so manufacturers turned to planned obsolescence and advertising to manipulate consumer spending.
