Steve Elcock: The Girl from Marseille: Divertimento for String Quartet (World Premiere)
The composer writes:
“The Girl from Marseille” is in eight short movements played without a break. The first is an introduction to the others and the eighth a finale in which, after a hesitant start (the players are instructed to play “as if they have forgotten what they are supposed to be doing”), recalls the opening movement before launching into a double fugue. The theme of which these movements are variations is not explicitly stated, but emerges gradually as the movements succeed each other.
