Recreational attractions on the banks of Afghanistan’s Qargha reservoir were all but deserted on September 7, 2021, with business operators in the area blaming economic hardship triggered by the recent takeover of the country by Taliban militants. The holiday getaway area 15km (9 miles) west of the capital Kabul had been drawing crowds for activities such as horse riding and visits to theme parks. Restaurants and hotels along the shore were also frequented by Afghan government officials and businessmen. While many businesses are suffering, some owners hope conditions will eventually improve.
