Tanz-Orchester „Sascha Elmo” (Efim Schachmeister) – Zuleika, Fox-trot Oriental von Garcia, Polyphon c. 1924 (Germany; accoustical recording) NOTE: Efim SCHACHMEISTER (born 1894 in Kiev, Tsarist Empire - died 1944 in Buenos Aires, Argentina). In age of 16 he was sent to the Stern Conservatory in Berlin to accomplish his musical education. In 1915, as a violinist, he joined the Popescu Tanz-Orchester, of which he soon became director. After a period of ragtime dance music, Schachmeister moved to the “jazz train“ around the mid-1920s and in 1924 successfully toured Germany, and a year later signed a contract with the Excelsior Hotel in Berlin. His next contracts were with Berlin’s most luxury dance halls and nightclubs, such as the Barberina, Palais de Danse and Pavillon Mascotte. He sometimes hired such distinguished musicians as trumpeter Louis de Vries, trombonist Henri van den Bossche, banjoist Michael “Mike“ Danzi and pianist Adam Gelbtrunk.
