Sevilla train at the Puskas Arena ahead of Roma Europa League final

Sevilla held their final training session on Tuesday in Budapest’s Puskas Arena ahead of their seventh appearance in the UEFA Europa League final against Jose Mourinho’s Roma on Wednesday. The Spanish club are the most successful side in the history of the competition, having played six and won six finals of the Europa League since their first win in 2006, when Europe’s second-tier competition was still called the UEFA Cup. Sitting eleventh in La Liga after a season where they have staved off relegation, Sevilla need to win the final to not only make it into the UEFA Champions League next season but also guarantee that they don’t miss out on European football for the first time since 2012-13. Head coach Jose Mendilibar became Sevilla’s third manager this season in March when he replaced former Argentina coach Jorge Sampaoli, with the team just two points clear of the La Liga relegation zone. Under his reign they have lost only two of 11 league games and are one point off seventh place going into the final round of fixtures this weekend. They are unbeaten in the Europa League after eliminating Manchester United — despite trailing 2-0 after 83 minutes at Old Trafford in the first leg — and Italian giants Juventus in a semi-final that was decided by an extra time goal from Erik Lamela in the second leg. The last time Sevilla won the Europa League, in 2020, it was also against Italian opposition, defeating Inter Milan 3-2 in Cologne, Germany.
