The aircraft is capable of delivering nuclear and conventional weapons over long distances and at high speeds, and is considered to be one of the most formidable bombers in the world today. Development of the Tu-160 began in the 1970s, with the first prototype flying in 1981. The aircraft entered service with the Soviet Air Force in 1987, and a total of 36 Tu-160s have been built to date.
