Bramante’s Tempietto, Montorio (Janiculum Hill), Trastevere, Rome

Built in 1502 at San Pietro in Montorio, Trastevere, Rome, the Tempietto is a triumph of Renaissance architecture. Built by Donato Bramante, it is a perfectly proportioned classical style structure erected on the supposed site of the martyrdom of St Peter. Bramante was then moved on to work on the rebuilding of St Peter’s. The building was widely admired and formed the template for Wren’s design for the new St Paul’s Cathedral in London following the Great Fire of 1666. It was featured in Palladio’s Four Books of Architecture (Book 4, Chapter XVII).
