Scotland’s Rainforests

Did you know that Scotland has rainforests? What are rainforests, and what makes Scotland’s rainforests so special? This lecture will explore the climatic and ecological conditions that define Scotland’s rainforests. Focussing especially on rainforest lichens, it will explore their biology and their conservation status, before considering the issue of climate change threat and the actions we can take to conserve these precious species into the future. Dr Chris Ellis, our speaker, is an ecologist with a special interest in the diversity and conservation of lichens. He has worked at the Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh (RBGE) for over 15 years, and is the head of RBGE’s research section on Cryptogams. A BSS talk given online on the 16 December 2021.
