Sporting #77, it was driven throughout the season by Price Cobb. His team-mate Pete Halsmer raced the second chassis, which wore the number 78. Cobb scored the RX-792P’s best result by finishing second at Watkins Glen. After the program was axed the cars were retained by Mazda North America and not touched for over a decade. Chassis 001 was eventually dusted off and prepared for a demonstration run some years ago. In the summer of 2009, the car was finally driven in anger again around Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca during the Monterey Historic Races, which featured a dedicated GTP class. Even though the variable intake-trumpets did not work, it proved to still be very competitive. Above all the glorious scream of the rotary engine stood out. It has since been a set fixture at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion.
