Greater prairie chickens “booming“ on the lek

Male greater prairie chickens sqaure off for dominance on the lek. The display, called “booming,“ allows dominant birds to attract mates. See these “ghosts of the grasslands“ in this audio slideshow and hear the deep, bellowing baritones hauntingly fill the air and sharp interruptions by cackling banshees whose evil laughter seemed to echo acute displeasure.
