The village was the core of the resistance during WWII and is well known for its antifascist movement and struggles. Medley of Syrtos dances, known as “syrta“ (Thoro T’ Agrimi), inspired by the lyra player (Thanasis Skordalos) Παραλλαγές Συρτών (Θωρώ τ’ αγριμι) εμπνευσμένα απο τον λυράρη Αθανάσιο Σκορδαλό Thanassis Skordalos (1920-1998) was a musician from Crete, noted for playing the lyra, the bowed string instrument of Crete and most popular surviving form of the medieval Byzantine lyra.
