Tony Cultreri “Silent Sorrow in Empty Boats“ (Genesis Cover)

This haunting Tony Banks/Mike Rutherford composition is an obsession of mine. From Genesis’ masterpiece “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway,“ it held the last position on side three. Most every night, with my trusty headphones on, I would get out of bed to move the needle back so I could hear it twice. Then I’d have to get up three minutes later, on cold New York winter nights, to flip the album over to side four. When the Sony walkman came out, I put it on my “Lamb“ cassette twice so when I was riding the subway I could hear it again without rewinding. Now that’s true love. My intention here was not to play the album version note for note, nor to play the live version, but rather to convey my memory of how the live version felt. I was lucky enough to be there both nights “The Lamb“ was performed at the Academy of Music in New York: December 6th & 7th, 1974. The audio mix on this video is comprised of just the two tracks you see me recording live in my studio. This piece of music is what my heart sounds like.
