Ukrainian grain terminal at Kakhovka reservoir inoperable after dam breach

Several Ukrainian grain terminals along the Kakhovka reservoir shore have become inoperable after the breach of the dam downstream on the Dnipro River more than a week ago. The director of the Zelenodolsk grain terminal in Marianske, Oleksii Mudrak, said on Wednesday (June 14) the water level of the reservoir had dropped five meters and that he did not believe levels would be restored any time soon. In normal times, ships would carry grain from Nibulon company silos by the reservoir down the river to a main grain terminal in Mykolaiv, from where the grain was exported abroad. Since Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022, the company has instead been transporting the grain from its silos via railway. Now, the breach of the Kakhovka dam, which unleashed a torrent of water and drained the reservoir, has further put into question whether the terminal and others like will be able to operate on the river again.
