Gladys Merredew (1933)

Pathe Studio. Full title reads: “Now to introduce the well-known Comedy Entertainer Gladys Merredew - I would if I could...“ Gladys looks very glamorous in a bias cut slinky frock. She sings a comedy song accompanied on the piano by an unnamed pianist. In reply to the question, “couldn’t you do without men“ Gladys’ reply is: “Oh I would, if I could but I can’t so I don’t“ which is roughly the chorus of the song. Other verses involve Gladys getting a marriage proposal and a being propositioned by the boss and a married man. She ends the song with a cheeky wink and curtsey. FILM ID: A VIDEO FROM BRITISH PATHÉ.
