Der Adler: Germany’s First Modern Locomotive

Der Adler was built by Robert Stephenson & Co of Newcastle Upon Tyne. It was the first “modern“ locomotive to operate in what is nowadays Germany, but in 1835 was the Kingdom of Bavaria on the Bayerische Ludwigsbahn. Der Adler and its sister locomotive Der Pfeil had a working life of around twenty years, being scrapped in the 1850s.
