Roger Casement Easter Rising Stories

Directed and edited by Marcus Howard. Roger Casement, a giant humanitarian over two continents, Africa and South America was fired to take on the Irish struggle having witnessed the degradation and poverty in Connemara in the early 1900s. His revolutionary story internationalised the 1916 Rising. Angus Mitchell, author of “One Bold Deed of Open Treason: The Berlin Diary of Roger Casement“ and “16 Lives: Roger Casement“ tells his story. Casement was so disgusted with the ill effects of imperialism and propaganda he negotiated with the Germans during WW1 on behalf of the Irish cause. From helping to mastermind the Howth gun running to avoiding assassination attempts Casement’s journey is a fascinating exploration of Empire, fighting against spin and intrigue and baring witness to human suffering while standing up for Irish freedom. W.B. Yeats, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Mark Twain, Joseph Conrad and many international leaders lauded this man who was hanged on a comma and whose body was treated in an extremely undignified way. Even 50 years after his death you will see how his existence challenged relations between Ireland and Britain when his body was repatriated to Ireland in 1965. It has been said of Casement to look well upon this man and you will uncover the secret of Ireland.
