I wrote this piece to explore an eleven note non-octaving scale I discovered. Repeating at the perfect fifth, the scale and its eleven modes are built from a chain of eleven 5:4 “major thirds“ which approximate the 9:8 just like in diatonic tonality where perfect fifths lead to major thirds. Originally had a piano sound, which the title is a joke on.
The painting is Bruegel the Elder’s Magpie on a Gallow.
