U.S finally recognizes Niger junta and announces plans to build relations with new regime

U.S. President Joe Biden’s special assistant on Africa, Judd Devermont, has revealed that America plans to build pragmatic but strained relations with the new military government in Niger that seized power in the West African nation on July 26th, 2023. Mr Devermont, the senior director for African Affairs at the National Security Council, revealed this information at the mid-October 2023 Financial Times Africa Summit, highlighting that America has chosen to recognise the Niger junta and forge relations with it moving forward because it now recognises the July 26th coup in Niger as a “fait accompli.” Essentially, America has finally acknowledged that the coup has already happened and cannot be reversed, so Washington has no choice but to accept it. Military juntas have deposed governments in the Sahel countries of Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, and Guinea in recent years. The fall of democratic regimes has constrained Washington’s ability to make an impact in the Sahel, where Islamist extremists affiliated with al-Qaeda and the Islamic State have infiltrated large areas of land and carried out several deadly operations. Nevertheless, Judd Devermont said the US needed “to add complexity“ to its relationships on the continent, and that even though it was “not business as usual“ in Niamey, the US could not simply abandon Niger. The United States maintains around 1,000 troops and two drone sites in Niger to monitor Islamist activity throughout the Sahel. “If we left Niger, it’s not just about Nigerien security. It’s also about the consequences for Ghana, Togo, and Benin,“ said Devermont, referring to coastal states with northern borders on the Sahel that are threatened by the spread of terror groups. “This is a region that is, unfortunately, seeing a real expansion of extremism. And it’s getting close now to the borders, if not spilling over the borders of the littoral countries,“ he added. ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ✅SUPPORT US /AFFILIATE LINKS Use this affiliate link for your purchases at #MIZIZI International - Support our channel - PayPal: newafricachannel(at) Follow us on Instagram - Follow us on Twitter - Join us on Facebook - ▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬ ✅COPYRIGHT DISCLAIMER The New Africa Channel doesn’t fully own some of the materials compiled in its videos.
