RSPB Loch Garten can be considered the home of osprey in the UK following their successful recolonisation close to this exact location in 1954. Ospreys were extinct as a breeding bird in the UK after being wiped out by persecution, but they are back and thriving once again!
After years of successful breeding at this location, the last few have seen much drama and unsuccessful attempts of birds settling down to breed. We’ve been busy improving the location including constructing a nest and are delighted that we have a breeding pair once again at this iconic location.
2023 Season
April 4 - last year’s unringed female, Asha, arrives. Blue AX6 is nowhere to be seen.
April 14 - Brodie (unringed male) arrives and begins courting Asha. Other males also try their luck over the next few days.
25th April - First egg laid.
28th April - Second egg laid
1st May - Third egg laid
4th June - First hatching
6th June - Second hatching
