Gibbeting - History’s Most BRUTAL Execution Method?
Throughout the centuries there have been many different execution methods used to brutally sentence someone to death. One of the most brutal and distressing methods of execution was gibbeting which was when someone would be suspended in the air above the public. Gibbeting was when a criminal would be displayed in a metal cage, and they were often killed before hands and their remains were then displayed. This was to act as a reminder to the people of a town of city to not commit crimes, and often attracted some criticism. Some people were gibbetted alive, as they were ’hanged in chains,’ and would have been left to starve and succumb to the elements high up in the cage.
The people of a city would pass under the gibbet everyday, and they would slowly see someone dying each day, until only a skeleton was left. Gibbeting was made more common in England as the Murder Act allowed judges to use the punishment for those found guilty of committing murder. It was also used to display remains of pirates
