He would go on to win the 1996 125 World Championship and then the 1998 250 World Championship, dethroning Motocross legend Stefan Everts in the process. He would move to the US in 1999 and found great success. unfortunately bad luck and injuries prevented Tortelli from winning any championships in the US. He would however challenge Ricky Carmichael, Beating Carmichael heads up several times in the Outdoor Nationals.
