Flying-foxes are highly intelligent and they are problem solvers.
Many behaviours are instinctual whilst many others are learnt but however this knowledge is ultimately obtained, these skills are invaluable for a life in the wild.
Using a foot to hold onto a large piece of fruit is very clever behaviour and it allows a flying-fox to grab a decent piece of something scrumptious before flying off to enjoy it at their leisure.
This behaviour ensures that even the youngest bat gets a bite to eat when times are tough and food is less plentiful.
I know it seems harsh but we don’t want our rescued bats associating predatory humans with food which is why the Black bat in the middle of the video was reprimanded.
