Bach wrote ’Jesus nahm zu sich die Zwölfe’, performed by the Netherlands Bach Society for All of Bach, as an ’audition piece’. He was applying for the position of cantor of the Thomaskirche in Leipzig and part of this application procedure was to perform two self-composed cantatas. It is disputed if, while composing, Bach tried to please his Leipzig audience or if he composed in his usual style and manner.
