The great Chilean tenor in what is possibly the best known aria in the tenor repertoire, thanks to early recordings by Caruso and others. The intensity of his passion is noteworthy. This kind of highly melodramatic singing and acting is what might be called the dark side of Commedia dell’Arte, which is a much deeper and more mysterious form of ancient theater than is commonly realized.
