Kris Delmhorst : Hummingbird

From the Talbot Hotel in Tregaron, Wales, Kris Delmhorst delivers a live rendition of her song, Hummingbird. Kris is from Cambridge, Massachusetts, has a number of solo recordings available as well as one with Jeffrey Foucault and Peter Mulvey (Redbird). This particular song, Hummingbird, is such a wonderfully unique song, at once both innocent and erotic. For me the song captures that moment of attraction when the heart speeds up. It speaks of what happens to us when we know that feeling, when the vertigo of our longing deprives us, momentarily, of our ability breathe easily, to dance as we’d wish to dance. It happens to us when we’re young and new to that attraction, but oh, it can happen when we’re farther along in our lives as well. The hummingbird’s wings are so fragile, yet they beat against the air up to 70 times per second, moving more rapidly to manage standing still. I know of no other song that sings of that feeling quite so well. And it’s springtime, and anyone with romance in their being wants to be in that moment again.
