Navalny’s body arrives at cemetery after ‘rushed’ funeral service

Mourners gathering in Moscow for the funeral of Alexei Navalny chanted “you were not afraid, we are not” as his coffin was carried into the church. Crowds also shouted Navalny’s name in tribute to the Russian opposition leader, who died last month at the age of 47 in an Arctic penal colony. Hundreds of people, among them the French and US ambassadors, lined the streets despite the Kremlin warning that “unauthorised rallies” will be “held accountable by the law”. A sizeable riot police force has been dispatched to the area, and snipers have been positioned on the rooftops of the city. Dozens of police vehicles are stationed near the church. Navalny’s funeral is being livestreamed by members of his team. Russian authorities are reportedly attempting to jam communications outside the church.
