Beehive Mounds; Underground Old World: The Treasury of Atreus (Largest Corbel Dome in the World)

Howdy ya’ll. Let’s take a deep dive into The Treasury of Atreus, also known as The Tomb of Agamemnon, founded circa 1350 BC in Greece. This structure is infamous for being the largest Corbel Dome in the world, and this unique complex also was the largest dome of any kind in the world for over 1,000 years, only being surpassed in Roman Times. A single piece of masonry in this “treasury” is said to weigh over 120 tons, noted as one of, if not the largest single piece of masonry in Ancient Greece. We will browse through the oldest known photographs, as well as some modern interpretations of the site, all while discussing the currently accepted history of the Treasury of Atreus. We’re told this underground dome was relatively unknown from the second century through roughly the 17th and 18th centuries.
