Training is needed to conduct each therapy procedure appropriately. A surgeon inserts a catheter into your abdomen a few weeks before peritoneal dialysis. Dialysis solution—salty water with additives—flows from a bag through the catheter into your belly when treatment begins. The solution and wastes leak from your belly into the empty bag after a few hours. You can flush the solution. Restart with a new bag of dialysis solution. Fresh solutions absorb trash quickly.
