Starting in the late 1940s, nearly every Eastern Bloc nation dedicated resources on an incredible scale to the construction of a socialist town to signal the dawn of each nation’s communist era. Equal parts propaganda efforts and industrial powerhouses, utopian “new cities“ like Nowa Huta, Dimitrovgrad, Dunaújváros, and Eisenhüttenstadt transformed the lives of tens of thousands of their citizens and left a permanent mark on their nation’s urban landscapes.
