Italian Mint dedicates new two-euro coin to pandemic health workers
(22 Jan 2021) LEAD IN:
Italy’s State Mint has presented a new commemorative coin collection for 2021.
The new collection, presented in Rome, includes a two-euro coin dedicated to healthcare professionals, a tribute to their efforts fighting the COVID-19 pandemic.
STORY-LINE:
The new coin depicts a doctor holding a medical record and a doctor - or nurse - with a stethoscope. Above is the word “grazie“, meaning “thank you“.
The two figures are intended to represent all healthcare professionals that have been dedicating their efforts to the coronavirus pandemic.
Three million of the coins are expected to be minted by 22 June and are intended for general circulation.
“It is not easy to represent the whole healthcare personnel with only two figures. I mean (the figure) must be a representation of both a doctor and a nurse,“ says Italian Mint Medalist Claudia Momoni.
“Unfortunately, the coin surface is limited, so it is very difficult to represent everybody in such a small coin.“
