It’s the year 219 BC; Hannibal started the Second Punic War by attacking the city of Saguntum. The siege lasted for 8 months before he stormed the town and captured it, paving the way towards Rome. Hannibal’s army consisted mostly of African and Iberian mercenaries. The Saguntines were allied with Rome. Preoccupied with the Illyrian revolt, Rome did not send help to protect the city even though they had warning of an attack by the Carthaginians two years before the attack.
