I remember long ago another starry night like this In the firelight Fernando You were humming to yourself and softly strumming your guitar I could hear the distant drums And sounds of bugle calls were coming from afar They were closer now Fernando Every hour every minute seemed to last eternally I was so afraid Fernando We were young and full of life and none of us prepared to die And I’m not ashamed to say The roar of guns and cannons almost made me cry There was something in the air that night The stars were bright, Fernando They were shining there for you and me For liberty, Fernando Though we never thought that we could lose There’s no regret If I had to do the same again I would, my friend, Fernando If I had to do the same again I would, my friend, Fernando Now we’re old and grey Fernando Since many years I haven’t seen a rifle in your hand Can you hear the drums Fernando? Do you still recall the fateful night we crossed the Rio Grande? I can see it in your eyes How proud you were to fight for freedom in this land There was something in the air that night The stars were bright, Fernando They were shining there for you and me For liberty, Fernando Though we never thought that we could lose There’s no regret If I had to do the same again I would, my friend, Fernando There was something in the air that night The stars were bright, Fernando They were shining there for you and me For liberty, Fernando Though we never thought that we could lose There’s no regret If I had to do the same again I would, my friend, Fernando Yes, if I had to do the same again I would, my friend, Fernando If I had to do the same again I would, my friend, Fernando... Writer(s): Benny Andersson, Björn Ulvaeus, Stig Anderson This song was originally recorded by Anni-Frid Lyngstad for her solo album “Frida ensam“ (1975) in Swedish. ABBA re-recorded this song in English with completely different lyrics in 1976, and it was their first non-album single, though it was a part of their album “Arrival“ issued in Australia and New Zealand. In most other countries it was only on greatest hits compilations. Björn Ulvaeus said about the origin of this song, “I thought long and hard, what does Fernando tell me? ...I was in my summerhouse one starry evening ...and I thought of two old comrades from some guerrilla war in Mexico who would be sitting in the porch and reminiscing about what happened to them back then.“ “Fernando“ is one of ABBA’s best-selling singles. It is one of singles sold more than 10 million physical copies worldwide, which made it one of the best-selling singles of all time. With such a title and rhythm this song was a proper track for ABBA’s Spanish-language album “Gracias por la música“ (1980). ABBA received their first international prize “Best Studio Recording of 1975“ for this song. In Australia this song had been the longest-running number-one hit—spending 14 weeks at the top and 40 weeks on the chart—for more than 40 years, until it was replaced by Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You“, which achieved 15 weeks at number-one position in May 2017. Cher performed a cover of this song for the film “Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again“ (2018).
